Laboratory: PPRIME Institute, Department: D1-PMM, Team: PDP

ED SIMME Doctoral School proposes the following thesis subject:

Title of the thesis : Deformation twinning in MAX phases: micro-mechanical tests analysis of dislocations-twin boundaries interactions

This project would be under the supervision of : Christophe TROMAS, D1-PMM department of PPRIME Institute at Universite de Poitiers.

Co-supervisor(s) : Anne JOULAIN /

Starting date: 10/2022

Thesis presentation:
The objective of this project is to study deformation twinning in MAX phases, which has been recently evidenced for the first time in these materials. The experimental approach will consist in generating deformation twins in a controlled manner by using micromechanical testing (nanoindentation, in situ (SEM) micropillar compression test). These twins will be then characterized by atomic force microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. Crystallographic orientation maps will be aslo performed by EBSD or by the ACOM-ASTAR technique. Particular attention will be paid to the interaction mechanisms between dislocations and twin boundaries, and to the mobility of the twin boundaries.
